In a remote service station, Jeanne and her small son Christophe anxiously await the return of François, who mysteriously left them two years ago.  Unable to live by herself, Jeanne has taken a lover, Marcel, whom Christophe has taken a dislike to.  In the little boy's bedroom, there is a photograph of his father and a model of the car in which he drove off...
