F.W. Murnau was a German film director, screenwriter and producer whose birth name was Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe. He was born in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany on 28th December 1888 and died in Santa Barbara, California, USA on 11th March 1931, aged 42.

His best films as a film director include Der Bucklige und die Tänzerin (1920), Phantom (1922), Der Letzte Mann (1924), Sunrise (1927) and Tabu: A Story of the South Seas (1931), and whose best work as an actor include Friedrich Porges's Der Film im Film (1925), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) and Sunrise (1927).
