Biography: life and films
Cédric Klapisch is a French film director, screenwriter, film producer and film actor.
He was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on 4 September 1961.
Having twice failed to gain admission to France's top film school, the IDHEC, Klapisch took a course in film studies at New York University. On his return to France, he made a short film, Ce qui me meut, which not only got him noticed at various film festivals but also provided the name for the film production company he went on to create with Bruno Lévy. He then worked on various corporate films and television documentaries before making his feature debut with the first of his social comedies, Riens du tout (1992). This was followed by Le Péril jeune (1994), which soon became a cult classic and set an unknown Romain Duris on the road to stardom. The screenwriting couple Jean-Pierre Bacri and Agnès Jaoui then persuaded him to direct Un air de famille (1996), which proved to be a major commercial and critical success. This was followed by Peut-être, a sci-fi oddity starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Romain Duris (in a Star Trek outfit), and the Euro-pudding hit L'Auberge espagnole, the director's most successful film to date. An idiosyncratic auteur filmmaker with mainstream appeal, Klapisch appears to have an infallible knack of pleasing both critics and audiences.
