Basil Dearden was an English film director whose birth name was Basil Clive Dear. He was born in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England on 1st January 1911 and died in London, England on 23rd March 1971, aged 60.

His best films as a film director include My Learned Friend (1943), Dead of Night (1945), The Captive Heart (1946), Victim (1961) and A Place to Go (1963), and whose best work as a screenwriter include John Paddy Carstairs's Spare a Copper (1941), Man in the Moon (1960) and The Man Who Haunted Himself (1970).
