Film Synopsis

To honour a promise he made to his wife, an old Chinese peasant named Zhigen decides to return to his home village so that he can set free his pet bird, the only companion of his declining years.  He makes the journey from Peking to Yangshuo in the company of his granddaughter Renxing, a spoiled city girl.  Despite their differences, the old man and his estranged relative soon develop a renewed bond of kinship as they share their memories and their adventures...
