Film Synopsis
Stanislas Dubois runs an advertising agency in Paris. In his line of
work, he has to deal with some difficult customers, but few are as imposing
as the young woman who comes to him one day, intent on foisting on him a
Cézanne painting. Reluctantly, he accepts her invitation to
dinner at a restaurant, but when he leaves he walks off with the wrong overcoat.
Realising his mistake, Stanislas attempts to return the coat to its rightful
owner - a man named Martin - the following morning, only to discover that
the man has been murdered - apparently poisoned. A possible suspect,
Stanislas soon finds himself under arrest and is taken to Colonel Derblay,
a senior officer in the French secret services.
Derblay reveals that Martin was a British spy and insists that Stanislas
should take his place on an assignment of some considerable importance.
Stanislas has no choice but to go along with the plan, and before he knows
it he is being abducted by enemy agents and taken to their lair. By
seeming to collaborate with his captors, Stanislas manages to gain their
confidence, allowing him to escape and bring about the arrest of their leader.
Then he learns that his enemies have sabotaged his car - the car that he
has just leant to the very same woman who set this extraordinary train of
events in motion! Stanislas now finds himself in a race against time
to rescue the woman he suddenly realises he has taken a liking to...
