Film Synopsis
Chloé, a young and somewhat idealistic French-Canadian, lives in Israel
but works as a midwife at a community hospital in a Palestinian refugee camp
on the West Bank. Relations between Israelis and Palestinians are more
strained than usual, following a wave of violent attacks by Palestinian activists
and heavy-handed Israeli reprisals. Determined not to take sides in
the conflict, Chloé strikes up a close friendship with individuals
in both camps - an Israeli soldier named Ava, one of her former neighbours;
and Rand, one of her many Palestinian patients. With her husband being
detained in an Israeli prison, Rand, a heavily pregnant woman, lives with
her mother and brothers, Safi and Faysal.
Time and again, Chloé's impartiality over the on-going Israeli-Palestinian
conflict is threatened by the atrocities she sees being committed by both
sides. As a result of traffic controls imposed by the Israeli
army, Rand is unable to get to hospital in time as she goes into labour,
and ends up giving birth in the back of a car. As a result, her newborn
baby son dies. This, together with the news that her husband is to
remain in an Israeli prison for the next twenty-five years, leads Rand to
accuse Chloé of being an apologist for Israeli aggression. After
another terrorist attack, Chloé pays a visit to Rand's older brother
Faysal at his printing works and has another shock in store for her...
