Film Review
As far as French comedy goes, the 1970s really was a decade that
deserves to be forgotten. Having notched up several box office
hits with the help of comedy legend Louis de Funès, director
Jean Girault spent most of the decade turning out bargain basement and
mostly humourless trash that deserves the appellation 'comedy' only in
a darkly ironic vein.
Deux
grandes filles dans un pyjama, the lamest of sex comedies, is
one of the worst films that Girault made, and it doesn't help that it
features one of the great divas of French cinema, Micheline Presle,
who, in this film, serves much the same role as a virgin in a Black
Sabbath mass - a sacrificial offering to the god of mediocrity.
The presence of Michel Galabru and Philippe Nicaud hardly comes as a
surprise - audiences would get used to these two cropping up in the
unseemliest of cinematic ventures - although here Nicaud (along with
pretty well the entire cast) is completely upstaged by his wearing
apparel. Garish, silly and vacuous - that just about sums up the
1970s in general, and French comedy in particular.
