Tout ça... pour ça! (1993)
Directed by Claude Lelouch

Comedy / Crime

Film Synopsis

A talented young lawyer, Marie, finds herself taking on the defence of three unfortunate men - Vincent, Jacques and Henri - who have managed to get themselves into deep water through a series of improbable escapades brought about by the women who led them astray.  Vincent, a compulsive gambler, was ready to commit suicide when he lost both his fortune and his girlfriend, Esmeralda.  He ended up sharing a room in hospital with Jacques, who was also driven to try to kill himself when his wife Marilyn left him.  Determined to make a fresh start in Canada, Jacques and Vincent stole a large sum of money after a bank refused to give them a loan.  After Henri, a taxi driver, talked them out of moving to Canada, the two friends ended by squandering their booty in a casino.

As she listens with interest to her clients' account of their serial misfortunes, Marie recalls her recent holiday in the Alps, which was no less eventful.  She and her lover Francis planned to use this excursion to force their respective spouses, Fabrice and Alessandra, into each other's arms.   But whilst Fabrice appears willing to go along with this blatant attempt at matchmaking, Alessandra resists - she is far too deeply in love with her husband to even contemplate an affair with another man.  When it becomes apparent to Alessandra that her husband has been having an affair for some time with Marie she is not in a forgiving mood.  In fact, on their next trip to Normandy, she pushes him over the edge of a cliff...
