Film Synopsis
Prague, in the winter of 1967. Tomas is a young and talented brain
surgeon who loves his work almost as much as he loves women. An inveterate
womaniser, he revels in the power he has over the opposite sex, but whilst
he has many affairs the only one that satisfies him is his present liaison
with Sabina, a painter who pleases him on both the physical and intellectual
plains. During a stay in the provinces, he encounters a pretty young
serving girl named Tereza and is so beguiled by her that he feels impelled
to take her as his wife. Happy though the marriage is, it does not
in any way lessen Tomas's craving for other women and he continues having
affairs, much to his wife's distress and disgust. As the Russian tanks
roll into the Czechoslovakian capital, the couple flee to Geneva. It
is here that Tomas renews his acquaintance with Sabina, an encounter that
makes his exile more delightful than it might otherwise have been.
Unable to bear her husband's infidelity any longer, Tereza leaves him and
heads back to Prague...
