Gerda and Einar Wegener are a happily married Danish couple who share the
same passion for art. But whilst Einar has no difficulty selling his
landscapes, Gerda struggles to find a buyer for her work. In need of
a model, Gerda casually asks her husband to pose for her as a woman.
Einar does as he is bid and, to his surprise, he feels surprisingly comfortable
in a dress and women's shoes. It is without hesitation that he accepts
his wife's proposition that he should accompany her to a party dressed as
a woman. In the guise of Lili, his female alter ego, Einar is the belle
of the ball and he soon attracts the attention of Henrik, who cannot resist
kissing him, much to the amusement of Gerda. Now that he has unleashed
his inner woman, Einar is reluctant to keep her under wraps any longer.
If only he could become a real woman... In 1930, Einar Wegener would
become one of the first people to undergo a sex change operation. Tragically,
Lili Elbe would die the following year...
