Film Synopsis
In Algiers, Cesar Sarati runs a downmarket boarding house, renting out
rooms at extortionate rates to coal haulers. Sarati is a mean and
despicable man who has amorous designs on his niece, Rose. But
Rose has fallen in love with another man, a former gambler named
Gilbert, who has sworn to change his ways if she will marry him.
In the end, Sarati loses not only his niece, but also his
tenants. Alone and ruined, he ends up killing himself.
