France, 1550. By dint of his untainted honesty and idealism, to say
nothing of his charm and physique, Philibert sets himself apart from all of
the other young men in his Breton village. He looks forward to the day
when he can inherit his father's thriving artichoke growing business, but,
alas, the Fates have a very different future in mind for him. On his
deathbed, Philibert's father confides in him a secret that he has kept from
him all of his life. Philibert is unsure how he should react to the
startling revelation that he is of noble blood - the son of Fulgence Bérendourt
de Saint-Avoise!
Philibert listens in horror and disbelief to the account of how his true
father met his unfortunate end - cowardly slain by a vile Burgundian man.
The latter can be identified by the distinctive birthmark he has on his neck,
one shaped like a rose. Without delay, Philibert leaves his home village
with his trusty servant Martin and sets out for Burgundy, where, he is sure,
his destiny awaits him. Our hero has seen so little of life that he
can have no idea of the perils that lie in store for him - dangerous varlets
and corrupting harlots! Philibert's courage, tenacity and - most of
all - his chastity will be tested to the limit by the improbable adventures
that lie ahead...

The greatest French film directors
From Jean Renoir to François Truffaut, French cinema has no shortage of truly great filmmakers, each bringing a unique approach to the art of filmmaking.
It was American film noir and pulp fiction that kick-started the craze for thrillers in 1950s France and made it one of the most popular and enduring genres.
