Nana (1955)
Directed by Christian-Jaque

Drama / Romance

Film Synopsis

Nana, a star of the music hall, never fails to shock Parisian society with her scandalous behaviour.  It is for her, the conscienceless temptress, that the banker Steiner has abandoned his girlfriend, Rose Mignon, and squandered his fortune.  Nana's next victim is the Count Muffat, chamberlain to the emperor Napoleon III.  Muffat spends so much time with his new mistress that his wife Sabine ends up by leaving him.  Then there is the Duke de Vandeuvre, who is willing to do anything to supplant Muffat and win the heart of Paris's most notorious courtesan.  Suddenly waking up to the intensity of the passions that she arouses in others, Nana decides to leave Paris and live with her good friend Fontan.  But the quiet life does not suit her and it isn't long before she is back with Muffat...

The best of Indian cinema
sb-img-22
Forget Bollywood, the best of India's cinema is to be found elsewhere, most notably in the extraordinary work of Satyajit Ray.
The very best of French film comedy
sb-img-7
Thanks to comedy giants such as Louis de Funès, Fernandel, Bourvil and Pierre Richard, French cinema abounds with comedy classics of the first rank.
The best of American film noir
sb-img-9
In the 1940s, the shadowy, skewed visual style of 1920s German expressionism was taken up by directors of American thrillers and psychological dramas, creating that distinctive film noir look.
The best of Russian cinema
sb-img-24
There's far more to Russian movies than the monumental works of Sergei Eisenstein - the wondrous films of Andrei Tarkovsky for one.
The best of American cinema
sb-img-26
Since the 1920s, Hollywood has dominated the film industry, but that doesn't mean American cinema is all bad - America has produced so many great films that you could never watch them all in one lifetime.
