Mademoiselle de la Charce (2016)
Directed by Lionel Baillemont

Drama

Film Synopsis

Marquise Philippe de la Tour-Gouvernet is a singular personage for whom French historians have long had a fascination.  Born into the nobility in 1645, it wasn't until her mid-forties that she forced her way into the history books, during the 1692 war between King Louis XIV of France and the Duke of Savoy, Prince Victor-Amédée II.  The details are somewhat contested but no one doubts the Marquise's involvement in galvanising the peasants of a provincial backwater into forming an army to fend of a fierce band of robbers.  Known as Philis La Charce, this spirited noblewoman is often visualised as a French 17th century Boudica, and King Louis acknowledged the debt he owed her with a generous pension.  But who exactly was this remarkable woman and how did she achieve such notoriety?
