Film Synopsis
A woman who has lost everything is walking the streets of Marseilles in
a state of intoxication. A young engineer, Jean Costes finds her
lying on the ground and takes her to hospital. He doesn't know
that the woman is Armance de Lunegarde, a countess who was turned out
of her own home by her husband because she has been performing in music
halls with a bad reputation. By chance, Jean has to go to the
Lunegardes' château to meet the owner, who rears dogs.
Lunegarde lives alone with his daughter Elisabeth, who hates him
because of the way he mistreats her. Attracted to Jean, Elisabeth
soon becomes his mistress. A short time later, Jean returns to
Marseilles and finds Armance ready to leave the hospital. Someone
else is waiting for Armance: her partner Bob Asselin, an awful man who
tries to take advantage of her. When Jean has to leave for a job
in Egypt, he is unable to forget Elisabeth. That is why he
decides to break off his engagement to his fiancée Suzanne de
Vertumne. But is this a wise decision...?
