Film Synopsis
In France during the Second Empire, Zélie Fontain works as a postmistress
in the provincial town of Argenson. She is a good-natured woman who
gladly agrees to offer a small service to Hortense, the wife of the town's
prefect. This consists of taking delivery of love letters written to
Hortense by her secret lover in Paris, François du Portal. Such
is the content of these letters that a scandal would be sure to break out
in no time if ever it were to become common knowledge. Unfortunately,
Zélie is not quite as discrete as Hortense had hoped and it isn't long
before the her secret gets out, bringing no end of trouble to the unhappy
woman and her entourage. It all ends happily enough, though, with François
agreeing to marry Zélie, with the emperor's blessing...
