Patrick has had enough of his miserable life in the rain-sodden north of
France. If he's not being beaten to a pulp in rigged boxing matches
for the benefit of his coach M'sieur Martinez, he is being nagged to death
by his annoying neighbour or else threatened by intimidating baillifs.
He decides to put an end to his woes by fleeing to sunnier climes, hoping
to help his cousin Marius out with his pizza stall at Narbonne-Plage in the
south of France. One evening during his long journey south, he ducks
into a bar and strikes up an acquaintance with Nathaniel, a small-time con
artist who is equally disillusioned with his life.
The two men hit it off straight away and agree to continue their journey
southwards together. After a number of bizarre encounters, the two
new buddies end up attending a village fête where they win a piglet
whom Patrick is quick to dub Martinez. At a roadside café Nathaniel
then falls instantly under the spell of Huguette, a cute checkout girl, and
at last finds an opportunity to part with his vignity - and not before time.
The prospect of marriage at the tender age of 35 is not one that appeals
to Nathaniel, so he is soon back on the road with his friend Patrick.
It is now that the latter feels he can take Nathaniel into his confidemce
and reveal his real reason for moving south. His hope is that he
can patch things up with his ex-girlfriend Claire, who left him two years
ago...

The silent era of French cinema
Before the advent of sound France was a world leader in cinema. Find out more about this overlooked era.
Since the 1920s, Hollywood has dominated the film industry, but that doesn't mean American cinema is all bad - America has produced so many great films that you could never watch them all in one lifetime.
It was American film noir and pulp fiction that kick-started the craze for thrillers in 1950s France and made it one of the most popular and enduring genres.
