Film Synopsis

It is like a fairytale dream come true.  To be married to a rich, world-renowned conductor, to live in a splendid medieval château surrounded by the most picturesque countryside, to live like the lady of the manor... Diane can hardly believe her good fortune when Georges de Rays asks her to marry him and then makes her the mistress of his magnificent country estate.  The role of the chatelaine is one that Diane was born to play.  When she isn't hosting lavish soirees for her many friends, she is out galloping across open pastures on the fine stallion her husband has bought for her.  Surely this is the stuff of dreams!

This is the kind of life that Diane feels she can comfortably get used to.  But gradually she begins to resent Georges's protracted absences from the château.  Admittedly, he is a busy man, having to appear at concerts all over the world, but surely he can find time for his wife? The novelty of Diane's new life soon wears off and boredom slowly takes its place.  Diane feels increasingly abandoned, and this leads her to become deeply suspicious of her husband.  It turns out that Georges has already married - six times!  This begs the question: what became of his six previous wives?  Those who know Georges suspect he may have murdered them - but so far there is nothing to substantiate this.  Diane is shocked when she comes to realise that her husband looks upon her not as a wife but as a little girl.  Exasperated by his neglect of her, she makes up her mind one day to disobey him.  This is when Diane's dream quickly becomes a nightmare...

From Jean Renoir to François Truffaut, French cinema has no shortage of truly great filmmakers, each bringing a unique approach to the art of filmmaking.
The best of American cinema
