Le Bal du comte d'Orgel (1970)
Directed by Marc Allégret

Romance / Drama
aka: The Ball of Count Orgel

Film Synopsis

In the aftermath of WWI, the people of Paris have just one thought: to enjoy life and forget all those lost years.  Two such merrymakers are the Count of Orgel and his wife, the Countess Mahé.  At the circus one evening, this couple meet François de Seyrieuse and invite him and his friend Paul Robin to one of the lavish soirées at their castle.  Very soon, François and Mahé become aware of a mutual attraction for one another but social etiquette prevents them from showing their true feelings.  But, one day, François cannot prevent himself from touching Mahé's hand.  Although the countess is moved by his gesture she considers it is her duty to inform her husband about what has happened.  Mahé is surprised by the Count's blasé reaction.  He assures her that François is an honest and decent man who could not possibly have any amorous designs on her.   However, François' feelings for Mahé run deeper than the Count suspects and he becomes anxious when his mother invites the Count and his wife to their house...
