Film Synopsis
Aïcha is 18 years old when she marries Saïd, but the union is hardly
a happy one as she only sees her husband for one month of the year.
For the remaining eleven months, Saïd - in common with many men from
his island - lives and works in Tunis, whilst his wife dutifully stays behind
in Djerba, to live under the rule of a domineering mother-in-law, as is the
custom. The month when the menfolk return to the island is one that
begins with great rejoicing, but it isn't long before the festive mood gives
way to disillusionment. Aïcha comes to resent being separated
from her husband for most of the year, so she implores him to let her accompany
him to Tunis.
Aware of the economic difficulties facing them, Aïcha offers to
supplement their income by making carpets which she can sell at a good price.
Saïd agrees to the arrangement, but on one condition: his wife must
first provide him with a son. It is with great joy that Aïcha
discovers she is pregnant not long afterwards, but her elation soon turns
to disappointment when she give birth to two daughters in quick succession.
Aïcha refuses to give up hope, and eventually she manages to provide
her husband with a son and she can finally get to live her dream. It
is some years later, when Aïcha returns to Djerba, that she finally
discovers the peace and serenity she has been looking for all her life...
