After the death of her father, ruined by risky investments, Jeanne de Romer must support not only herself and her young siblings, but also her mother and grandfather.  Things go from bad to worse when she loses her job as a typist after her employer is arrested for fraud.  Marthe Geffier, the owner of an upmarket brothel, comes to Jeanne's rescue, offering a substantial loan in the hope that she can coax her into her establishment.  When she discovers her benefactor's intentions, Jeanne makes a hasty retreat.
