Film Synopsis
The return of the wolf to the south of France has resulted in a fierce debate
between farmers concerned for their livestock and ecologists keen to protect
wild life. In his film, Jérôme Ségur allows both
sides of the argument to have their say, often with some heat and no shortage
of feeling. For some the wolf symbolises nature at its most untamed
and beguiling. For others it is merely vermin that destroys livelihoods
and spreads disease. It is certainly true that the return of the wolf
is bad news for some farmers, who are already on the breadline. But
there are also compelling arguments from those who are keen to see the wolf
accorded some form of protected status. Is it possible that a compromise
situation can be arrived at that will satisfy both the farmers and the ecologists?
Or must we choose between the wolf and the sheep, accepting as we do so that
there can be no place for wildness in the world we are fashioning for ourselves...?
