La Face cachée (2007)
Directed by Bernard Campan

Comedy / Drama

Film Synopsis

Isa and François are a couple in their forties who appear to be quite settled in their lives.  They have been together for some time but recently they feel as if they have become strangers.  They no longer know how to communicate with one another and they have become wrapped up in their own private concerns, unsure where their lives are heading.  François is presently in the grip of a severe mid-life crisis and is constantly preoccupied with death.  Nothing seems to interest him any more, and the only person he can confide in is his best friend Xavier.  The latter does all that he can to advise and encourage his friend, but in truth he is just as flummoxed as François is about the whole business.

It would appear that something is driving François and Isa apart, but the former has no idea what this could be.  Isa shows no outward signs of discontent, there are no rows or hysterics, but her partner instinctively knows that their relationship has turned sour.  In the end, François comes to the conclusion that Isa must be having an affair.  His suspicions appear to be borne out when he sees her in the company of another man.  Naturally, François feels he is owed an explanation, so Isa willingly provides him with one.  How easily the lies trip off her lips!  She might almost have been rehearsing this scene for years.  Her unsuspecting partner has yet to see her hidden face...

The very best American film comedies

American film comedy had its heyday in the 1920s and '30s, but it remains an important genre and has given American cinema some of its enduring classics.
The brighter side of Franz Kafka
sb-img-1
In his letters to his friends and family, Franz Kafka gives us a rich self-portrait that is surprisingly upbeat, nor the angst-ridden soul we might expect.
The very best fantasy films in French cinema
sb-img-30
Whilst the horror genre is under-represented in French cinema, there are still a fair number of weird and wonderful forays into the realms of fantasy.
The best of Indian cinema
sb-img-22
Forget Bollywood, the best of India's cinema is to be found elsewhere, most notably in the extraordinary work of Satyajit Ray.
French cinema during the Nazi Occupation

Even in the dark days of the Occupation, French cinema continued to impress with its artistry and diversity.
