Film Synopsis

Basile, a storekeeper, leads a seemingly peaceful life on the banks of the River Meuse, on the border between France and Belgium.  Not on the best of terms with his wife Rose, he spends his evenings drinking with his neighbour, a journalist on a local newspaper.  One day, Basile attracts the attention of Maryse Duval, an attractive young woman who has recently returned to the region after failing to make a name for herself as an actress in Paris.  It isn't long before Rose discovers that her husband is having an affair with another woman.  Knowing that she has had to give up her own ambitions to marry Basile, she is ill-equipped to deal with the on-coming domestic storm...
