Film Synopsis

In Italy at the turn of the century, Mori, a doctor in a psychiatric hospital, tries to lead a peaceful life with his wife Vittoria, in spite of the violent events taking place in the world around them.  They have a child but Vittoria has no affection for the new-born boy.  She does her best to care for him but she cannot bring herself to breastfeed him.  In the end, Mori has to hire a nurse, Annetta, a pretty young country girl.  Annetta succeeds where her employer's wife failed in establishing a bond with the baby.  As a result, Vittoria falls ill...
