Film Synopsis
Venice in the 15th century. As he does every morning, the young
baker Pietro walks through the streets of Venice to deliver bread to
his customers. Arriving at one of the bridges over the canals,
Pietro is surprised to come across a man lying on the ground, killed
with a knife. The baker recognizes the dead man as Alvise Guoro,
a nobleman who was loved by every woman and hated by every man.
When another man arrives on the bridge and sees Pietro holding the
knife, he mistakes him for the killer and Pietro takes flight.
The baker finds shelter in the house of Count Lorenzo Parma, where his
girlfriend Anela is employed as a maid. At the time, Lorenzo is
away visiting his mistress Countess Sofia. When the news of the
murder arrives at Sofia's house, Lorenzo must pass it on to his wife
Clemenza, since she is Guoro's cousin. Lorenzo thinks that Pietro
could be innocent but he cannot prevent the baker from being arrested
by a group of judges called the Doges, who are under pressure to
arrange a trial and execution as quickly as possible. When Sofia
hears of these developments from Lorenzo, she decides to start her own
inquiry to uncover the truth and find the real
killer...
