Film Synopsis

In the early 1990s, Yu-liang gives up the life of a prostitute in a small Chinese town so that she can marry Mr Pan. With her husband away from home fighting in the revolution, Yu-liang takes up painting at the Shanghai Art Institute. When her husband returns, she allows him to take up with his first wife and moves to Paris, where she pursues her studies. In the 1930s, she returns to Mr Pan and teaches art until her former life in a brothel is revealed...
