Douglas Sirk was a German film director and screenwriter whose birth name was Hans Detlef Sierck. He was born in Hamburg, Germany on 26th April 1897 and died in Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland on 14th January 1987, aged 89.

His best films as a film director include Magnificent Obsession (1954), All That Heaven Allows (1955), Written on the Wind (1956), The Tarnished Angels (1958) and Imitation of Life (1959), and whose best work as a screenwriter include Schlußakkord (1936), Zu neuen Ufern (1937) and Hans Hinrich's Dreiklang (1938).
