Summary
On hearing that she has inherited a fortune from her aunt, Antoinette Espitalion returns to her native Marseilles, accompanied by her docile husband, Fernand.  With his wife occupied with the formalities at the notary’s office, Fernand slips into a pub for a quiet drink.  As he gets slowly drunk, Fernand strikes up a conversation with another man, Pierre Durand.  The latter profits from Fernand’s intoxicated state by exchanging his identity papers with him.  When Fernand finally comes to his senses, he is on a boat bound for Oran.  He is about to take Durand’s place as a volunteer in the French Foreign Legion...
