Spécial police (1985)

Spécial police is a French thriller film first released in 1985, directed by Michel Vianey.  The film stars Richard Berry, Carole Bouquet, Fanny Cottençon, Jean-Pierre Malo and Benoît Régent.  It has also been released under the title: Special police.  Our overall rating for this film is: mediocre.


Having been present at the murder of her brother and his wife, Isabelle Rodin attempts to make contact with David Ackerman, a friend of her brother her works in the scientific branch of the police service.  Unbeknown to Isabelle, her brother has uncovered a network of high-profile figures involved in illicit arms and drugs dealing.  She and David become the next targets of the ruthless killers who have been assigned to protect this deadly secret.

Richard Berry and Carole Bouquet star in this stylish but unevenly paced (and painfully formulaic) action thriller, directed by Michel Vianey.  Berry and Vianey had previously worked together on a similar thriller, Un assassin qui passé (1981).  Whilst Berry and Bouquet are individually rather good in the film, they appear uncomfortable together, and their lack of on-screen chemistry is what prevents the film from having the human dimension it desperately needs.  The action scenes are well choreographed but this cannot make up for a creaking script which is over-reliant on ludicrously improbable plot developments.
