Summary
Georges Clou is the very model of a happy middleclass man. He is
married, has a good job, a nice house in a new residential suburb, and
everything else a man could want: wife, son and dog, all perfectly
house-trained. Paul Marteau, by contrast, considers himself
outside this cosy little world. Although he is rich and
intelligent, he doesn’t feel that he belongs anywhere. When these
two men meet, little do they know that they will each have a lasting
impact on the life of the other. Clou sees Marteau as a good and
sincere man who will become a great friend. Marteau regards Clou
as the thing he most despises and intends to use him to expose the
superficiality of Clou’s comfortable little world...
