Summary
By the side of the pool at his luxury villa, Alain Durieux sits in his wheelchair, quietly contemplating his past life whilst his wife subjects herself to the over-attentive care of their friend, Dr Valois.  To think that Alain was once a third rate insurance broker, living a humdrum life with nothing to look forward to.  In the end, Alain was so depressed that he made up his mind to kill himself.  It was at this crucial moment that Dr Valois entered his life and invited him to act as a guinea pig in an experimental trial for a new anti-depressant treatment.  Valois believed that by making slight modifications to the brain he could make people happy forever.  With nothing to lose, Alain submitted himself to the treatment and, to his surprise, he was transformed into a completely new man...
