Summary
Vincent Fleuret is the humble assistant of Professor Moucherotte, a renowned chemist who is on the point of finding the formula for Benzyl, a revolutionary new compound.  Just about everyone seems to be keen to profit from Moucherotte’s discovery.  The Noblets, the family who provide lodgings for the professor and his assistant, expect that Benzyl will make them rich, as does a group of financiers, who have smuggled a mole into the household, in the form of a butler.  When Moucherotte collapses, the world is led to believe that Vincent possesses the highly prized formula.  The naive young man soon finds himself the centre of attention...
