Summary
On a farm in a remote part of French countryside, Betty lives alone
with her ten year old son Tommy. The latter has never known his
father and imagines him to be an astronaut. Each night, Tommy
watches the sky, waiting for his father’s return. Betty
hasn’t the heart to tell him the truth, and, besides, she has problems
of her own. She struggles to earn enough money and her attempts
to find a man to take the place of Tommy’s father have so far proven
fruitless. Seeing his mother’s unhappiness, Tommy finds a way to
cheer her up. When he sees a travelling circus, he persuades
Betty to give the performers permission to set up camp on her
land. He strikes up an immediate friendship with the two clowns
Auguste and Baptiste, one of whom takes a liking to his mother...
