Synopsis
Spring 1944.   A truck containing several people who have been arrested by the Germans is suddenly attacked by the Resistance.  One of the survivors is Pierre, a young architect, who flees and hides himself in another truck.  When he lights a cigarette taken from the dead driver, there is an explosion and Pierre is badly injured.  A short time later, the helpless Pierre is discovered by Jeanne Moncatel as she is heading homewards on her bicycle.  With the help of Dr Andrieux, she takes Pierre to the large house where she lives with her mother.  Madame Moncatel is a mean and fastidious woman who has persuaded her daughter that she is ugly and stupid.  Dr Andrieux has long been in love with Jeanne but, under her mother’s influence, she turned down a proposal of marriage.  With Madame Moncatel unaware of his presence in the house, Pierre responds affectionately to the care that Jeanne gives him.  Just when these two people start to feel something for one other Dr Andrieux announces that Pierre will stay blind for the rest of his life...
