Summary
France, 1880. François Roquevillard is a respected lawyer
in Chambéry and the head of a family that prides itself on its
impeccable morals. How rapidly does François’s world begin
to fall apart when his son Maurice elopes to Italy with Edith Frasne,
the wife of an esteemed notary. When Frasne discovers that
200,000 francs has been stolen from his safe, he immediately files a
lawsuit against Maurice. As the high society of Chambéry
turns its back on the Roquevillards, Maurice’s sister Marguerite has to
end her relationship with Raymond Bercy and François’s wife
Valentine dies through shame. Yet through all this
François still clings to the belief that his son is innocent...
