Summary
After the execution of Louis Mandrin, a well-known outlaw and popular underworld hero of the 18th century, his former partners in crime decide to chance their luck with a smuggling operation in the provinces of France.  Well-armed, the smugglers arrange markets on the outskirts of the villages, where they sell tobacco, fabrics and other precious commodities.  They write songs in honour of Mandrin, which they then print and distribute among the poor folk of the kingdom...
