Les Amants de Teruel is
perhaps the most beautiful film ever made. I saw it first in 1962 and
at practically every opportunity (about 6) after that. Unfortunately,
by the last time I saw it on a movie screen, around 10 years ago, the
colors had degenerated so badly (Eastmancolor, presumably) that, a
person who had never seen a pristine copy would have a much lesser
impression of it.I managed around that time to get an expensive VHS copy of this great film (with English subtitles), but, aside from the inevitable technical limitation of VHS quality, the videomakers had chosen to crop it (Pan and Scan), rather than Letterbox it. I have found absolutely no indication in numerous searches that this film has ever been available in any other video format or even in a VHS version without subtitles. Maybe in these days of high definition video, somebody will bring this film to disc. It would be worth buying a BluRay player for that alone!
