An ethereal short film film in which director Agnès Varda, following André Breton’s advice to renew the face of Paris, plays with the real monument of a lion in plaza Denfert-Rochereau, through the imagination of a fortune teller’s apprentice (Julie Depardieu).  Suddenly, the lion holds a bone in its mouth, or disappears, or is substituted by a cat (Varda’s Zgougou she-cat), symbol of serenity and caprice, according to tarot interpretations in the picture.  Only Depardieu will see the changes in the monument, just as she alone will know the new guard of a nearby museum, who courts her during his break.  But her suitor will appear to be as volatile as the lion of the statue.  As the sign on a passing van states: everything will disappear.  Nevertheless, the girl will adopt the serenity of the cat that seems to be speaking to her from the pedestal of the monument.  Lion volatil is a post nouvelle vague Cinderella’s tale with a cat in the role of the prince. A flitting film whose spectators may return home displaying the smile of a Cheshire cat.
