Tired and fatigued from the self-confident Poirier, we see his son-in-law in action - not so confident, more human and more vulnerable. In contrast to his father-in-law, he faces the situations with more compassion and vigour, and more humility.  Pagnol tries to indicate the overwhelmingly difficult tasks of new generations compared to the old one.  At first the film was accepted with sombre nods, but gradually the public melted and in the end it was accepted wholeheartedly.
