Summary
Because he was born on the 21st of August at 12 o’clock, has no
children and has killed no one, François Ledru, a garage
mechanic, is hired by Nicolas Shabbas to drive a big white lorry.
Shabbas promises to give François the lorry if he will undertake
a 12 thousand kilometre journey across France in two weeks.
François agrees and Shabbas reveals that he belongs to a gypsy
tribe of northern France. The tribe’s king has recently died at
Saint-Ouen and, according to the law of his ancestors, his body must be
taken along the roads he traversed in life in a white caravan driven by
a man born on the 21st of August. Unfortunately, Shabbas’ enemy,
Edgar Courbassie, is prepared to do almost anything to thwart this
mission, so that he can become the gypsies’ next king...
