Summary
Having failed to rob the Count de Chamery of his inheritance, the villain Andréa only just manages to escape death.  Although blind and disfigured, he appears to harbour no ill feelings towards his former associate Rocambole.  In truth, he is a bitter man and plans to blackmail Rocambole through a letter which he signed when he agreed to work for Andréa.  Realising Andréa’s intentions, Rocambole acts swiftly and puts him out of the way once and for all.  However, Venture, Andréa’s henchman, manages to steal the letter and takes it to Countess Artoff, alias Baccarat, who immediately denounces Rocambole to the Marquis de Monteveccio.  The Countess attempts to expose Rocambole by confronting him with his mother, but her scheme fails when Madame Fippart pretends not to recognise her son and Rocambole contrives a story to acquit himself.  Undeterred, the Countess leaves for Constantinople with her husband to look for Major Gordon, the one person who can identify the real Count de Chamery...
