I saw this film when I was a resident of Belgium in the early sixties. I found it to be a remarkable avant-garde movie, with the same incoherent yet orderly humor found in Ionesco’s plays, an absurd story full of noise and fury, in some Banana republic. In particular, I enjoyed the performance of Daniel Emilfork (probably at his best in this movie, with his haunting appearance and unforgettable, yet hard to define, accent, in French), as well as Jacques Dufilho’s – both passed away in recent years. Given my age at the time I also was impressed by the advanced erotic dimension of the movie.  I wish a DVD/video of La Poupee would become available. I have been looking for one for years, to no avail, yet I am sure there would be an audience for it.
