Summary
At the house of Elisabeth Vermont, a young and rich widow, an auction is being held for the benefit of the orphans of the police department.  Shortly afterwards, the notary Darcet is waylaid whilst he is carrying the proceeds of the auction, and his attackers flee with the loot.  Inspector Guimard starts an inquiry into the theft, but he must also deal with the murder of a gaoler by a prisoner named Daniel Morane, who has just escaped from the central prison at Melun.  Injured, Morane takes shelter at Elisabeth’s house, where the kind widow nurses him back to health.  Morane tries to persuade his benefactor that he is a victim of circumstances, wrongly imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.  Elisabeth is unsure if Morane is telling the truth, so she decides to broach the matter with Inspector Guimard...
