Summary
The setting is the island of Ouvéa in New Caledonia, April 1988.  When thirty policemen are taken hostage by a group  of Kanak separatists, the French government sends in a battalion of 300 soldiers to restore order.  Police chief Philippe Legorjus attempts to negotiate with the leader of the hostage takers in a bid to avoid a bloody skirmish.  But with the French presidential election underway and several political reputations at stake, those who seek to resolve the crisis cannot afford to let morality get in the way of a successful outcome...
