Summary
Christophe and Charlie first met in Paris, in front of a poster advertising a circus.  It was from their shared interest in fairground shows that their love for one another was born.  With their two children, they leave Paris behind them and wend their way down the highways and byways of France with their travelling fairground show.  Inevitably, in each village they arrive at they arouse the mistrust of the police and the hostility of those who have been in the fairground business for far longer than they have...
