Dans tes rêves (2005)

Dans tes rêves is a French film comedy-drama first released in 2005, directed by Denis Thybaud.  The film stars Disiz La Peste, Béatrice Dalle, Alex Descas, Vincent Elbaz and Jean-Pierre Cassel.  Our overall rating for this film is: good.


Ixe has one passion in his life: rap music.  His dream is to make a living as a rap artist but, coming from a poor housing estate, his chances of success are virtually non-existent.  His mother constantly nags him to get a proper job, for example with the post office.  One day, he meets hip-hop producer Ava, who is about to make his dream a reality...

Whilst the scenario is hardly original, Dans tes rêves is a respectable attempt at a rap musical, albeit a pretty tame imitation of Curtis Hanson’s 8 Mile (2002).   In his debut feature, Denis Thybaud directs the film with self-assurance and successfully crafts an urban fairytale, which is buoyed up by the contributions from a talented supporting cast.  The film probably does not have as wide an appeal as it merits, but for those who like rap and French films with a social theme it is certainly worth checking out.
