Summary
Jean, a reporter on a major Parisian newspaper, tells his colleague Françoise that he is busy pursuing a secret investigation that will bring him fame and fortune.  The next day, Jean is killed, ostensibly by a drunken driver.  Unconvinced by the official account of her friend’s death, Françoise decides to pursue his enquiry herself.  In Jean’s office, she finds her first clue – the address of Madame Irma, a fortune teller.  When Françoise pays a visit to Irma she pretends to have come to Paris to find a job.  Through Irma, Françoise is soon engaged as a housemaid at the villa of the wealthy Maria Bloit.  The latter’s associate, Monsieur Raymond, introduces her to Mado, the owner of a cabaret which, as Françoise soon discovers, serves as a transit point for a white slavery operation...
