Marguerite Duras wrote and directed this languid tale of a long-suffering mother of three and wife of a wealthy philanderer.  Recounting her travails to a group of curious women, Vera (Claudine Gabay) reveals the curious arrangement made by her husband Jean (unseen in the film) who, as part payment on a gambling debt, gave her to one Michel Cayre (Gérard Depardieu).  The conversation takes place in a luxurious seaside villa where Vera has gone to decide if she wants to rent for the summer, hesitating at the steep asking price of one million, which happens to be the price the husband received as payment on his gambling debt.  Why Vera would acquiesce to the arrangement one might conjecture to a fondness for the luxury represented by her dress and the villa.  Indeed, Vera admits as much: "Money is a terrible thing. It’s never enough. It’s terrible."
